Mayor's Task Force Against Substance Abuse Committee Meetings: Developmental Assets Trainings Community 40 Developmental Assest Training April 14, 2010 Are you worried about your kids, the kids in your neighborhood, or the kids in your child’s classroom? What if you knew that there were practical actions you could take to make a positive difference in the lives of young people around you? Well there are! These actions can help all young people grow up to become healthy, successful, caring adults who choose positive paths. The actions you can take come from the 40 Developmental Assets, a positive youth development framework. The 40 Developmental Assets are the resources that all young people need in their lives to help them grow up. They are the building blocks for human development and provide a sense of security for all young people. They help young people make positive healthy choices and stay away from risky behaviors and choices. The Waterbury Prevention Policy Board will offer Developmental Assets trainings free of charge to all participants, and certificates of attendance are provided. All parents, youth, community members and anyone interested in learning more about how to make a positive impact on a child’s life, should attend. They are open to all. For more information on the 40 Developmental Assets, the Waterbury Prevention Policy Board or to register, please contact Nicole Porto at 203-568-0575 or Email: CommunityLiaison@WaterburyBridgeToSuccess.org Local News: Courageous Parenting 101 is a free, four-session substance abuse education and prevention program developed by The Courage to Speak Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit to help parents understand substance abuse and its impact on children and youth. The program will be offered by facilitators certified by The Courage to Speak Foundation Inc. and will cover a variety of materials, such as fundamentals of substance abuse prevention, drug trends in America, signs of drug use, communication skills, how to find out if your child is using drugs, what to do if your child is using drugs, how to access help, MTV, MySpace, Facebook, and other timely relevant material. You will gain the tools and knowledge required to communicate more effectively with your children on substance abuse issues. It is expected that participating parents will demonstrate an active role in supporting children's decisions to not use tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. You will also develop improved listening and communication skills, which have been shown to be a critical factor in the prevention of substance abuse by young people. Courageous Parenting 101 is open to ALL parents and is FREE of CHARGE.For more information, please contact Caryn Olcik at (203) 573-0264.
